BYU Basketball Pull Out Wins 3-0
Another great week and a half for BYU men's and women's basketball with a 3-0 record over three games.
Men's Basketball (Now 10-3)
#1 December 20, 2014 vs. Stanford (Won 79-77)
#2 December 23, 2014 vs. University of Massachusetts (Won in overtime 77-71)
Women's Basketball (Now 8-3)
#1 December 22, 2014 @ Utah State (Won in double overtime 62-58)
These were the last non-conference games for both teams. Starting Saturday, they will be playing WCC foes for the rest of the regular season starting with Gonzaga for both teams...Gonzaga is the best team in the WCC for men's and women's. For both men's and women's BYU basketball they've have pretty decent non-conference records with only 3 losses each. Men's losses came to three good teams in San Diego State, Purdue, and Utah. San Diego State and Utah are both currently ranked. Women's losses came also to three good teams. One is currently ranked and undefeated...Oregon State ranked at #10.
Here's to a successful run in conference games this season starting at their first tough games against one of the best teams in the WCC historically, Gonzaga.
Men's Basketball
With two close wins, I would think they would have gained some more national recognition after beating two well-known universities in Stanford and Massachusetts. With the Stanford game, game #1, One thing that helped BYU stay in the game was 21 of 29 on free throws. They were otherwise pretty even with field goals when compared to Stanford. The lead changed 8 times throughout the game which shows how close it was. Also BYU dominated in 2nd chance points. With the Massachusetts game, the free throws made the difference again...especially in the overtime play. Overall BYU was 26 of 32 on free throws compared to Massachusetts (12 of 17). Otherwise, again, BYU and Massachusetts were even on field goals. Also Anson Winder was a big playmaker in that game when Tyler Haws was struggling. Anson scored a big 25 points off the bench along with Skyler Halford with 8 and Corbin Kaufusi with 6. With those three guys contributions along with a big game by starter Kyle Collinsworth, BYU was able to stay in the game and defeat Massachusetts.
Men's Game #1
Tyler Haws: 24 points; 4 assists
Chase Fischer: 16 points; 2 steals
Kyle Collinsworth: 15 points; 10 total (7 defensive) rebounds; 7 assists; 2 steals
Anson Winder: 13 points; 4 defensive rebounds
Isaac Neilson: 6 rebounds; 2 blocks; 6 points
Men's Game #2
Anson Winder: 25 points; 5 rebounds (4 defensive)
Kyle Collinsworth: 18 points; 15 rebounds (10 defensive); 4 assists; 3 steals
Chase Fischer: 8 points; 2 steals; 2 assists
Skyler Halford: 8 points; 5 rebounds (4 defensive)
Corbin Kaufusi: 6 points; 1 block; 2 steals
Women's Basketball
The BYU Women's team had a very closely fought game with Utah State...a fabulous and intense rivalry game. During the first half BYU struggled with three-pointers with 0 made out of 8 but still got the lead at half-time with 5 free throws. The score at halftime was 23-18 with BYU ahead The second half had Utah State catching up a couple more field goals than BYU (including one more three-pointer) to tie the game. In the first overtime, only 4 total points were scored between the two teams, and then in the second overtime, BYU was able to finish it ahead by two with a lone three pointer between the two teams and 5 for 6 on free throws whereas Utah State was only 2 for 2 on free throws and no three-pointers.
Women's Game #1
Lexi Eaton: 29 points; 8 rebounds (7 defensive); 4 assists; 2 steals
Morgan Bailey: 19 points; 22 rebounds (17 defensive); 2 assists; 1 block; 3 steals
Makenzie Morrison: 4 points; 3 steals
Ashley Garfield: 4 points; 7 rebounds; 2 assists; 2 steals
Kylie Maeda: 2 assists; 1 defensive rebound
Team: 8 rebounds

Today I just want to share a story that happened to me yesterday. My father was dropping some food off for an elderly woman, and I wanted to join and be a part of it. It was a great experience to see a smile on her face when it was explained what all we brought her.
It is an amazing thing to feel that happiness within yourself when you give to others. God fills you with that happiness and a peace that you can't feel otherwise. You can feel peace and happiness other ways, but through doing service it feels different...a better 'different'.
I promise y'all that if you do something to help others through service with a giving heart, you will feel something like I did.

#SharetheGift 12/23/2014
When the star appeared in the sky, three wise men were called by King Herod to go see the Christ child (because the king was afraid the child). So they traveled to Bethlehem to find Christ. In the scriptures, it reads, "When they had heard the king, they departed; and, lo, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was. When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy. And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, frankincense, and myrrrh." (Reference: Matthew 2:1-11)
During this time of the year, let us give gifts to others. As the wise men did in giving gifts to Christ, we will be blessed if we do the same in thinking of others more than ourselves. The wise men were led by God through the star to the Christ child, so that they can share the news with others and have the wonderful opportunity to give what they had to Christ their Savior.
Let us do the same in giving to others this season...giving through physical objects or acts of service to those who are close to us. If we do that, it will help be a reminder of the true meaning of Christmas.
#SharetheGift 12/22/2014
When the angels came to the shepherds in the fields and told them that, "Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord." They were told where to find the Christ child, and went directly to see them. I believe they knew who He was and what joy and peace He would bring to the world. (Reference: Luke 2:8-14)
After they saw Christ, "they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child. And all they that heart it wondered at those things which were told them by the shepherds." The shepherds were so overjoyed by the news and sight of Christ, that they wanted to share that gift with the world. (Reference: Luke 2:15-18)
I challenge y'all to share the story of Christ's birth to your families. Strive to remember the true meaning and reason why we celebrate Christmas...to remember and celebrate the birth of Christ.

BYU Women's Volleyball End Season with Second Place
This last weekend, the BYU Women's Volleyball team led by great athletes like Jennifer Hamson and Alexa Gray played in the final four of the national tournament and went on to play in the National Championship against the defending champion, Penn State. This would be only the second time BYU has gone to the final four.
On December 18, BYU played the semifinal game against No. 2-seeded Texas. They won the first two sets, lost the third, and then finished the game with a kill to cap the set 26-24 and to win the game 3-1. Jennifer Hamson had a great game with 22 kills, 25.5 points, 10 digs, and 7 block assists. Alexa Gray also had a great game with 19 kills and 20.5 points. The third best player in my opinion was Alohi Robins-Hardy, a dual-threat athlete like Jennifer Hamson in basketball and women's volleyball. She had a good game with 54 assists. and 8 digs.
After winning against Texas, BYU went on to the National Championship to play No. 5-seeded Penn State (defending champion). The first two sets were close in points (25-21, 26-24), but BYU wasn't able to pull the win in either one of them. Then Penn State won the game with a third win to make the final score 3-0. Jennifer Hamson again had a good game with 14 kills, 8 digs, and 16 points. Alexa Gray had 9 kills and 10 points, and Amy Boswell had 7 kills and 9.5 points. Alohi Robins-Hardy had 31 assists and 8 digs. The women had a tough time trying to beat them, but just couldn't pull the win.
Finishing in second place, BYU went farther than some people thought. They excelled and made an excellent run with 3-0 and 3-1 wins throughout the whole tournament until the national championship. With players like Alexa Gray, Amy Boswell, and hopefully Alohi Robins-Hardy returning next year, they should have another great season. They ended this season with a great 30-5 overall record.
Jennifer Hamson has now finished at BYU and has a big decision to make in whether she wants to pursue volleyball or basketball. The Los Angeles Sparks drafted her earlier this year, so if she wants to go that route she has an open door for her in basketball, or she can go pursue professional volleyball.
BYU has Tough Loss in Miami Beach Bowl
In a tough-fought game, BYU lost their bowl game of the season in the Miami Beach Bowl game against Memphis. The final score was 48-55 in double overtime. It was played yesterday, Monday, December 22, 2014, and they now have an overall record of 8-5.
It was a well fought game. The offense had good drives and the defense had good stops. The offense and defense was also generally good for Memphis too. There were fumbles and interceptions caused by both teams but with BYU having one less turnover. In total yards BYU and Memphis were pretty even with BYU having 425 total yards and Memphis having 480 total yards. BYU and Memphis both converted all 4th down conversions. BYU had more passing yards than Memphis but less rushing yards. BYU was 3 for 3 on Red Zone scoring whereas Memphis was 6 for 7. BYU defense had the only defensive touchdown off of a sweet interception near the end of the game.
There were a lot of good things that happened which I pointed out. Christian Stewart was roughed up quite a bit with 2 sacks and many other hits. At one point it looked like he was sit out and McCoy Hill was going to take over, but Stewart was able to get back out on the field to finish the rest of the game. I think he showed great strength in order to try to get the win for his team. Other offensive players with big games were Algernon Brown, Paul Lasike, Mitch Mathews, Jordan Leslie, and Mitchell Juergens. They all performed with great strength when it was needed of them. There were many defensive players with big games too. You can look at the stats below but some of them were Zac Stout, Alani Fua, Travis Tuiloma, and Harvey Jackson. And all those names are just naming a few out of many who executed when they needed to to keep BYU in the game.
Some of the weaknesses BYU showed were the snaps to Christian Stewart. I don't know what happened there, but there were at least 5 or 6 of them where Christian Stewart showed up to keep those loose balls from being turnovers. Also there were still tackling issues from the defense and special teams. Both the BYU and Memphis quarterbacks (Stewart and Lynch) threw some questionable passes that were intercepted. But regardless of those weaknesses, I think BYU overall did a good job against a good defense and overall good team in Memphis.
They have things they can sharpen up over this break before next fall. Seniors like Christian Stewart, Alani Fua, Craig Bills, and Paul Lasike will be leaving on their own paths, but superb players like Taysom Hill, Jamaal Williams, Bronson Kaufusi, and Mitch Mathews will be returning to help BYU play against one of their toughest schedules yet. They will need them all and others in full health as they battle teams like Nebraska, Missouri, Boise State, Utah State, and Michigan. It is sad to see the seniors leave but they will for sure move on to bigger and better things ranging from jobs from their majors or going to the NFL. We will find out in the first half of next year who decides to try for the NFL. As far as I know, no one has declared yet if they will do it or not, but I'm sure at least a few are thinking of it.
Here's to a tough but overall winning 8-5 season. Injuries were major challenges this year but they were able to overcome them to win their last 4 regular season games after a 4-game losing streak. Here's to another good season next year with at least a couple of NFL prospects returning for their last years at BYU. Let's go BYU Cougars!
With the season and post-season over, BYU football will have spring and fall practices (during the summer) before their first game of next season (2015). That game will be played against Nebraska in Lincoln, Nebraska. I'll probably post during the summer my opinion of the upcoming 2015 season lineup.
Here are some quick stats from the game:

#SharetheGift 12/21/2014
This a neat video that gives a beautiful rendition of the song "The First Noel" with scenes of a wintry, snowy city with acts of kindness and a neat nativity scene in a home with two little kids.
This time of year is a special time where we can solely focus on the gift of giving and Christ's birth. On that special night of His birth, God gave the best gift of all. He sent His beloved son down to this Earth in order to bless us immensely. Even today we still feel His influence as we hear of his miracles and gifts of faith to others. My challenge to y'all is to serve God through following Christ's example. I know that is one of the reasons why God sent him here...so that we may have an amazing example to follow. If we do as Christ did in giving to others, we will find more joy in this world. In the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.
#SharetheGift 12/20/2014
Here's another great video in the which Christ teaches that it is better to use our talents instead of hiding them. I have heard various interpretations of this parable, but the one I believe is that of sharing our talents and using them. If we have a talent, skill, or trade with which God has blessed us with...given us freely, we must use it. I challenge y'all to use that talent to share a gift with someone else. And if you do, like Christ teaches in this video, God will bless you with more. The scriptural reference for this parable is Matthew 25:14-30.
#SharetheGift 12/19/2014
The video on this blog is an amazing one where Christ and His apostles feed 5000 people with only 5 loaves of bread and two fishes. You might think it impossible but with Christ's faith and God's power, it was completed. All 5000 people were filled, and Christ shared an amazing gift with all of them. A scriptural reference for this miracle is Matthew 14:13-21.
We might find that we don't have the time or energy to share a gift with someone else close to us, but if we ask God and have faith, he will help you...give you the time and/or energy.
We might find that we don't have the time or energy to share a gift with someone else close to us, but if we ask God and have faith, he will help you...give you the time and/or energy.

The Santa Clause
One of the best Christmas films made, Disney's "The Santa Clause" stars Tim Allen as a divorced businessman, Scott Calvin, who finds himself one Christmas Eve night as the new Santa Claus after the former one basically gave Scott the "mantle" after falling off the roof into the snow. At first Scott/Santa didn't believe it. Over the next year he went through trying times, but his son always believed in him and continually reminded him how important his job is.
I grew up in a home where this was a must-see film by my mother every year around Christmas-time. It's a great classic with great acting and a great plot. Tim Allen executed well in portraying the development of Scott's character. Plus I liked the acting of those who played Scott's son, ex-wife, and his son's new father. The only small negatives about the movie are two crude words (ones I don't even notice). This film is rated PG. I recommend this film for all families.
I would give this film an overall 5-star rating!

Men's Team
For the most part, the men's team did a good job these last two weeks. The only time they struggled was against Utah (Game #3) where they lost by only 4 points. They had a chance to tie it near the end but couldn't the points. Interestingly enough, with all three losses this season for them, they've only lost by 11 total points. The offense is looking good except they are struggling in inside shots which hurt them a bit against Utah. Hopefully they can get more of those so they compete more against the bigger teams. A couple of injuries occurred. Nate Austin and Tyler Haws are down with injuries. Tyler Haws has a left ankle sprain. The severity of it is yet unknown. Nate Austin has a torn right hamstring which will keep him out for at least two weeks. Game #1 at Utah State was a close one at the end of the first half (Utah State winning 32-31), but BYU pulled ahead with their 24 straight free throws in the second half to win it. Game #2 versus Hawai'i was played in the EnergySolutions Arena in Salt Lake City (home of the Utah Jazz). BYU was winning at half time by 7 and then pulled even further ahead by outscoring Hawai'i by 13 in the second half. Game #4 was at Weber State where BYU had an amazing number of 12 three-pointers (63.2% completion), and that ended up helping them win the game.

BYU and Colorado State both had a lot of three-pointers with a combined 17. BYU was able to maintain the lead for most of the game. Star Wars Episode VII - Teaser Trailer Thoughts
I just wanted to share some of my thoughts on the teaser trailer for Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens.
I love the footage they included in the trailer. I love how they introduced some of the new characters to the franchise, had amazing footage of x-wing fighters and the Millennium Falcon, and the shots of the stormtroopers in the transport-type vehicle. The thing that was a little sad was that there wasn't any footage of Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, or Leia, but I'm sure they will be in the next trailer or something. I'm excited to see how the new characters fit in to the Star Wars Universe, and I'm excited to learn about the plot of the movie.
In addition, recently J.J. Abrams and Lucasfilm released some "trading cards" to go along with the teaser trailer. There are names of the new characters in the trailer revealed on the cards. I have the cards down below. They are fun, classic-looking cards focusing on each video clip from the trailer. I have wrote a little under each one.
With the teaser trailer and these trading cards revealed, I'm sincerely and officially teased. I am very excited to see what else they release to us as the film premiere date gets closer and closer.

When I saw this droid, BB-8, I automatically think of R2-D2 and C-3PO. I feel that BB-8 will have a similar role in this trilogy of as they did in previous films. It is unknown yet how much we'll see of R2-D2 and C-3PO in this new film, but I'm sure we will see them.
One thing that was brought up in a YouTube video I saw about these cards was that Finn doesn't have a last name here like in other characters on cards below. I believe that that is because it is a familiar last name that will be revealed later. It will be exciting to see who Finn fits into the film.
My personal opinion is that this is a new villain. I read or hear somewhere online of what it might mean that the Force is awakening. I agree with them that the force awakening means that the dark side of the force might be showing itself for the first time since "The Return of the Jedi" (the last Star Wars movie). Also, with the lightsaber, I've read some things where people don't like the lightsaber design here, but when you think about it, it might be that this character built this lightsaber to fit his fighting style and personality. It's been done like that in the past.
Not much to say here except it's my favorite clip from the trailer. I love the detail on the Millennium Falcon and the angles of it flying across the desert. The CGI looks amazing.
This clip was my second favorite clip in the trailer. The x-wings flying across the body of water is some sweet CGI effects. It's a beautiful shot.
The three shots of these stormtroopers in what I'm guessing is a transport-type vehicle were also neat. They have a new armor design that looks sweet, and it just makes me excited to see more modern-day film shots of these and many other things in the Star Wars universe.
Like with Finn on a card above, Rey's last name is probably one that is well-known among Star Wars fans, so they will probably release her last name later. I love the shot of her on her speeder, and I'm excited to see what role she has to play in the film.
Let's just say that the helmet design is sweet. This shot makes me excited to learn more about this new character, Poe Dameron. I also love that they still have the rebels symbol (it is on his helmet).

BYU Bowl Announcement 2014
Alongside a lot of announcements for post-season college football, it was announced who BYU Football (8-4 overall record) will be playing in the Miami Beach Bowl game. They will be playing the American Athletic Conference co-champion (they tied with two other teams, Cincinnati and UCF), the Memphis Tigers. Memphis has an (9-3 overall record; 7-1 conference record) experienced veteran defense and two good running backs. They are 5th overall in points against (17.1 points per game) and 30th in points scored (34.7 points per game).
From what I know about Memphis so far, I think it will be a good game. Memphis told their conference that they want to play BYU, so for me it's good to see that desire to play us.
Here are some broadcast details. It will be played on Monday, December 22, 2014, at 12:00 PM MST (2:00 PM ET) and broadcast on ESPN! Plus, on BYUtv there will be the daily BYU Sports Nation show (10:00 AM MST), the Countdown to Kickoff pre-game show (11:00 AM MST), and after the game (approximately 3:30 PM MST) the Post-Game show!
If you want to catch up on some of the football games from this season, you can go to BYUtv's website (here's the link) and the BYUtv Sports website (here's that link). They have the Houston, Virginia, Utah State, Nevada, and UNLV games so far for this 2014 season.

BYU pulls out another win at California's home field in a 42-35 win. They played this last Saturday, November 29, 2014, and now has a current record of 8-4.
The offense and defense both played well. The defense still isn't the best but on the last drive, they were able to stop California from scoring and tying the game. The offense had a great game with Christian Stewart getting his highest passing yard count in a game so far. He also got the most passing touchdowns in a game so far. Jordan Leslie also did well with the next best offensive performance of the game. Scott Arellano, the punter, helped a lot in pinning California back 3 out 4 times with his punts. Penalties are still a problem, but hopefully those improve. Despite those penalties, though, and the inconsistent execution of the defense, BYU as a whole team was able to get the win. The game was a hard-fought close game the whole time. With a half-time score of 21-14 (California winning), BYU was able to outscore in the second half with a defense who was able to stop California more than in the second half.
It has been a tough but good season for BYU so far. They are now 4-0 since their losing streak in October, and they should be able to make that 5-0 after the bowl game if they can continue to play as a whole team.
Their last game for this season is their bowl game, the Miami Beach Bowl, played in Florida on Monday, December 22, 2014, versus an American Athletic Conference team who is unknown right now. It is currently scheduled to be broadcast at 12:00 PM MST on an unknown network. When more details are announced, I will do a quick post about it.
